When you think about your smile, you may immediately imagine your teeth. While your pearly whites can look as aesthetic as possible, they are more than just that! Some people might not even know much about these home-grown structures, so here are 10 fun facts about them that can give you a better understanding.
1.) Every Smile is Unique
No two people have the exact same set of teeth. That means that no one can show off a smile that looks like yours. Because of how unique they are, dental records can even help with identifying someone!
2.) Teeth Are Like Icebergs
Your gums actually cover about a third of your chompers. That’s why the health of these soft tissues is important, since they help keep them in place and strong.
3.) On Average, People Have 32 Total
Starting from the front of your mouth to the back, you have your eight incisors, four canines, eight premolars, and twelve molars. However, some people have more while others may have been born with less.
4.) Enamel Isn’t a Living Tissue
Enamel is often thought to be like bones, but it’s a non-living tissue. There are no cells or nerves inside of it, but rather it’s made of a crystal structure that protects the dentin underneath.
5.) Dentin Grows; Enamel Can’t
The second layer of a tooth is made from tiny channels that help transmit nerve signals and nutrients. It can grow and change, but enamel can’t since it doesn’t have these tubules.
6.) The Hardest Substance Your Body Makes is Enamel
Going off a point above, this layer is made from calcium and phosphate. They are arranged in a way that helps make it stronger, with proteins and crystallites making it more durable.
7.) Your Teeth Can Get Damaged
Despite being tough and reliable, you can still get chips and cracks. Not only that, but the bacteria in your mouth can erode it when they eat sugar and starch particles leftover from meals.
8.) Your Mouth Has an Oral Microbiome
There are about 200 to 300 different germ species in your mouth. Some are good, while others are bad, like the Streptococcus mutans, which can weaken your enamel with an acid they produce.
9.) Yellow Teeth Aren’t Always Stains
While discoloration can be caused by different foods and drinks, it may also be a sign of cavities. As the outer layer becomes thinner, it can expose the yellow dentin underneath, increasing your risk of decay. You might feel sensitivity to hot and cold items when this happens.
10.) 10,000 Gallons of Saliva Are Produced in a Lifetime
On average, you make a quart’s worth of saliva every day. This turns into thousands of gallons over your lifetime. It may seem like a lot, but it’s important in washing away harmful bacteria and strengthening your teeth.
